Serengeti
The
Serengeti National Park is the
second largest of Tanzania's parks,
it covers 14,763 sq. km. in the
north of the country. The name is
derived from the Masai language and
means "endless plains". It rises
from 920 -1,850m ab ove sea level.
The landscape varies from the long
and short grass plains in the south,
the central acacia savannah, the
hilly, more wooded areas in the
north, and the extensive woodland,
black clay plains and mountain
ranges of the western corridor. The
main rainy season is from November
to May. Some of the most famous
features of the Serengeti are the
spectacular concentration of plains
game, and the annual wildebeest
migration, together with the large
cats, including lion, that follow
the herds. Nearly 500 species of
birds have been recorded in the
park.
