Climbing Kilimanjaro on the Machame Route: Machame route on mount Kilimanjaro, Machame route climbing guide, info, climbing and hiking guide

Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing - Hiking

Route No.1 : Machame Route: Overnight in Tents (6 days/5 nights)

Highly recommended: This is probably the most beautiful route up Kilimanjaro. With gradual ascent through forest you emerge to see wide view of the moorland on Shira Plateau, Kibo and the western breach.

Day 1: The route starts at Machame gate (2000m). Walking through thick forest until it eventually breaks into giant heath near Machame Hut Campsite at 10,000ft. it takes 4 to 5 hours walk to reach the hut station.

Day 2: Ascend through heath and moorland to Shira Hut at 12,598ft. Overnight with fine view of Kibo’s Western Breach and wide Shira Plateau.

Day 3: From Shira Hut, you can go on to the Barranco Hut 3,900m (12,795ft) this takes about 5 to 6 hours. You will have to spend your night at Barranco Hut.

Day 4: After breakfast, you proceed to Barafu Hut 4,600m (15,500ft), the path climbs steeply out of Barranco valley, it crosses the Karanga Valley then turn to reach Barafu Hut for overnight.

Day 5: You begin the summit climb in the frigid post-midnight hours, passing through Stella Point about midway between Gilman’s point and Uhuru. You proceed to UHURU PEAK at 19,340 ft. The highest point in Africa.
From there your descend straight to Mweka Hut station for overnight.

Day 6: The descent continues to mweka Gate.
